The spring time can be tough because of how much, and how quickly, the weather changes: one minute it’s beautiful and sunny and the next it’s raining, or even worse, snowing again. This type of weather can put a damper on that barbecue you planned, and your garage can seem like the perfect place to move your grill to keep those burgers dry. Unfortunately, this can pose several risks to your safety.
The first risk with grilling inside is that of a fire. Lighting a fire, whether it’s with charcoal or natural gas, in your garage where there can be all sorts of chemicals from gasoline to lawn fertilizer can lead to severe fire damage. Fires, in this case, are caused by sparks flying from the grill and making contact with these substances. If your garage is wooden, sparks can also hit wooden walls and ceilings and have a similar result. Grilling out in your garage can lead to much more getting cooked than just some burgers and food.
An even bigger problem with using your garage to barbecue is carbon monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless gas that can have deadly results if not monitored properly. Carbon Monoxide is the same gas that is emitted from your car and is the reason why you should open the garage door before starting a car. In the case of your barbecue, opening the garage door will not be enough to counter this gas. Both charcoal and gas grills emit high levels of carbon monoxide, and not giving this gas an escape can have serious consequences.

Where to Grill in the Rain
This is not to say that a grill should never be under cover due to these risks. The important part is to prevent the carbon monoxide from building up like it would in the confines of your garage. Opt for a lean-to or pavilion instead of the garage. These structures still have a roof to keep the food from getting wet, but the open walls let the carbon monoxide out and reduce the risks for fires.
